The Mayor of Shenzhen, Mr. Xu Qin visited SILK Ventures on 8th September to discuss collaboration opportunities and experience the vibrancy of London and the UK’s tech sector first-hand. He was accompanied by business leaders from Shenzhen which has arguably become China’s Silicon Valley. Delegates included representatives such as Mr. Wang Chuanfu - the Chairman of BYD, one of the world’s leading electric vehicle companies, and Mr. Zhao Xianming, Chairman of ZTE which is the Chinese telecommunications giant. Sir George Iacobescu, Chairman of the Canary Wharf Group took part in the visit as well.
It was our pleasure to share SILK Ventures’ track record and plans for growth in Shenzhen with the Mayor. Our Managing Partner, Angelica Anton spoke about SILK’s mission to make China the first destination for any technology company wanting to go global. This was backed up by the results of our first cohort of companies that were taken to China this summer.
Angelica Anton said “We see Shenzhen as the ideal launch pad for technology companies entering China. With its strength in innovation, manufacturing and talent, we believe the city provides a great environment for entrepreneurs to scale up their businesses. We look forward to working closely with the Mayor, his team and local enterprises to support our portfolio companies in that endeavour.”
The Mayor was impressed with our plans and he pledged his full support, opening the door for SILK and its companies. In off-the-cuff remarks he shared eloquently with those present his views about Shenzhen, its history and future plans. The Mayor of Shenzhen, Mr. Xu Qin said “Shenzhen has seen extremely rapid growth and is now the centre of innovation in China with immense resources for companies to scale up and go global. I very much welcome SILK Ventures and all interested companies to join us in our great city and grow together. We are excited to support you on your journey.”
Following formal proceedings, the Mayor talked to a number of scale-ups SILK Ventures has been working with and we had invited to join us for the visit. He and the delegation were seen in lively discussions with companies in big data, VR and clean-tech who are all ready to set up their operations in Shenzhen.
As the accelerator and investment company dedicated to scaling technology companies into China, we are looking forward to deepening our collaboration with the city of Shenzhen and taking our portfolio companies there. This visit was just the beginning and we are looking forward to what’s in store next.
